About the Wine

Just as a song’s lyrics give meaning to its melody, the vineyard gives unique character to a wine. Etude has handcrafted its celebrated Pinot Noir from the Carneros region for over 30 years and is now taking its steadfast study of the varietal to the famed Santa Barbara Country appellation. Influenced by the minimal-intervention philosophy of its parent winery, Lyric is an authentic expression of Santa Barbara that is true to its classic Pinot Noir characteristics.

About the Vineyard

Santa Barbara County’s lengthy growing season and coastal climate make the appellation a perfect place to grow balanced and concentrated Pinot Noir fruit. The southerly location of these inland valley vineyards provides generous sunshine to ripen grapes to full maturity, but the cool direct influence of the Pacific Ocean moderates the heat, making this one of the coolest growing regions in California. The east-west transverse valleys, unique to this region, open the vineyards directly to the maritime fog and breeze, and cool the sunny valleys significantly. The grapes for Lyric’s inaugural vintage are sourced exclusively from two famed Santa Barbara vineyards. Fiddlestix Vineyard is located along the Santa Ynez River bench in the cool Santa Rita Hills AVA, and North Canyon Vineyard marks the western boundary of the Santa Maria Valley AVA.

About the Vintage

The 2011 growing season in Santa Barbara County was very cool and ideal for producing wines of great aromatics. The cool temperatures remained consistent well into the summer months of June and July, but by autumn the weather turned near perfect and warmer temperatures provided the grapes optimal maturity. The long growing season allowed the grapes to fully ripen, develop rich flavors and retain natural acidity.

Winemaking

This Santa Barbara Pinot Noir was made with very minimal winemaking intervention in order to reflect the unique terroir of North Canyon and Fiddlestix Vineyards. Lyric undergoes open-top fermentation with extended time on the skins and is then aged for 11 months in French oak barrels. The wines are subject to a rigorous lot selection to ensure the highest of quality.

Additional Information

Displaying vibrant hues of ruby that glimmer with a hint of blue, the 2011 Lyric by Etude Pinot Noir opens with classic varietal aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry and cranberry. The youthful palate generously showcases notes of baking spice and toasted almond that are enhanced by silky, round tannins. This true expression of a definitive Pinot Noir is inviting and approachable, but also displays a balanced structure and bright acidity, making it the perfect pair for an assortment of food.
